LIKES for students The Living In the KnowlEdge Society (LIKES) course series gives you the opportunity to satisfy your Curriculum for Liberal Education (CLE) requirements while learning skills and concepts of applied computing that are redefining the global workplace.
LIKES courses integrate computing concepts into the activities of diverse disciplines. Regardless of your major or minor, you can be a LIKES scholar and fulfill the CLE requirements in special course sections that emphasize the use of computers and technology across disciplines. For example, you could take an English course based on web writing and publishing, or you could be enrolled in a history course focused on electronic databases.
How can LIKES help you fulfill your CLE requirements?
- Find on the list of LIKES-designated courses the CLE area offerings recommended from your major checksheet (you should talk to your academic advisor before and after doing this).
- Be sure that you can take the recommended CLE courses for your major (in some cases, not all the LIKES-designated courses work for all majors. For example, an area 4 course in Chemistry could not be the best option for a business major).
- Consult the list of CLE courses in other areas to design the curriculum most interesting to you. LIKES doesn't give you options for ALL your CLE courses, so you still need to work with your advisor in finding choices for all your requirements.
How can you become a LIKES Scholar?
So you have met your advisor and found some LIKES-designated courses that look interesting. Then, you should do the following:
- Take the one-credit LIKES intro course (CS/BIT/ACIS 1614) during the fall semester of your freshman year.
- Choose 12 hours of LIKES-approved courses in at least 3 different areas of the CLE. Please refer to the growing list of LIKES designated courses.
- Take the one-credit LIKES capstone course during the spring semester of your sophomore year or later.
Students who complete the minimum requirements will receive a LIKES certificate.
